Interview with what.cd and waffles.fm admins

What Waffles? The Hydra Lives On
Written by Ben Jones on October 30, 2007

With the demise of oink, many music aficionados were left with little in the way of similar sites. However, true to the hydra phenomenon, a week later and several new sites have sprung up to replace it. We asked the admins of two of these sites for their future plans.

What Waffles? The Hydra Lives OnBoth what.cd and waffles.fm are set to continue from where oink left off, with the same rules and requirements. Each of them aiming to provide music lovers with a place to both share and discuss music.

What.cd (currently offline at time of publication) was founded the day of the OiNK takedown. “I felt sick to my stomach all morning” was how ‘What’, co-founder of what.cd described the day OiNK got raided. “We plan to grow into a large tracker - probably not as large as oink, and not as open, but eventually, I would like to support at least a hundred thousand users,” he adds

Waffles.fm on the other hand, doesn’t open for another few hours (12:01AM PST on October 31st). “In principle we’re filling a gap in the market - a lot of people just don’t get on with open / lenient trackers. In restoring that we’re also bringing back the community OiNK had, which is a big part of it,” is how waffles co-founder ‘Barney’ put his site to TorrentFreak. He is also not being as openly ambitious at first as “What” either “We’re looking at inviting perhaps 200 or less people on the opening day. We’ll gradually invite more people as things progress.”

Neither of the admins showed much enthusiasm for BOiNK, the project that is in development by the guys behind The Pirate Bay. Their main concerns were in the overall quality, and longevity of torrents on a public tracker. Somewhat ironically, however, both sites are aiming on moving to take up permanent hosting at the PRQ datacenter, as soon as upgrades there are complete. “The electricians started their work of installing another 3×200A feed yesterday” a PRQ source told TorrentFreak today.

And the reaction of the old OiNK staffers? Paine, currently the public voice of the old OiNK team, had no real comment on them, beyond hoping they both do well, and reiterating that neither is an ‘official’ replacement for OiNK.

So waffles.fm will have only 200 users at first? What?!?! Jeez, all this huffing an puffing for nuttin...

On another note: The what.cd folks I spoke to really want the word to get out.

At least a few folks in the irc chat room wanted this story to be dugg:

This is great news.

And people need to be patient. There will no new OiNK overnight.
For example, waffles.fm opening up --at first-- to a small userbase is smart.

(OPP is over and any replica hosted on a scammer's free domain siteis bogus. You know who I'm talking about and its neither site mentioned here.)

That p2p users and admins have rallied so quickly in a week's time speaks to the strength of the larger community.

I'm pretty pos. they're giving out more than 200 invites at first.. and each of those invited will get invites for friends and such..

Anonymous said...

Would you mutants give up on the oink.6x.to.

If anyone comes up with an invite to either of these, feel free to hook me up. :p

This kind of sucks. I've never taken a screenshot of my account before... :(

I can confirm that there will be more than 200 invites given out, plus a significant amount of invites given to each corresponding invitee.

Hell, there are 1200 people on the waffles.fm IRC chat right now.

The 200 may reflect just the initial wave of invites they're sending to those who signed up on the mailing list. Soon after they'll invite all those who can provide proof of oink membership. It'll probably have 200 members for about a few hours.

okay, 80 minutes before the BIG unveil and waffles.cd still has no other files uploaded to their public directory.
Is this a big nothing?

Well I forwarded my evidence I was an oink user and I haven't been invited....I don't know why but it'd be nice to have a response from waffles!

Am I the only one who smells a rat with this Waffles.fm deal? Last week, the BPI and IFPI had a threat on Oink.cd to investigate all of us, and this week the website is advertising Oink's replacement? How did these guys at Waffles get their hands on the domain name?

Could be, but don't think so

1. Domain is registrated under an Irish address
2. Server is located in USA
3. Admin has posted on several PHP related sites

Hey I keep trying to log in to irc.bitient.org to join #what.cd but I keep getting "Unable to resolve server" (I tried changing my port from 6667 to 6697, but I'm not sure if/how to configure SSL?) Can someone please tell me what I'm doing stupid? I maintained a good ratio on OiNK (1.4-1.7) Thanks in advance.

I guess it would help to state I am using mIRC v6.2!
